Punjabi suits are a form of outerwear in the Indian locale of Punjab. They’re also referred to as pyjamas, lounge suits, or lounge-wear. They’re mostly worn for lounging at home or on the weekends. Punjabi suits are also popular formalwear in North India and Pakistan.
Punjabi suits are usually made of thick
fabric, usually wool or cotton fabric, usually with a velvet or satin finish.
They’re usually loose-fitting and comfortable. The outfit is usually paired
with a churidar pyjama, a long shirt and pants are worn underneath. Like most Indian
outfits, Punjabi suits are usually paired with a dupatta or a scarf. However,
the scarf is usually in a contrasting colour to the outfit to make it stand
out.
In India and Pakistan, they’re normally worn as lounge suits. They’re also seen in a slightly different form in the rest of North India. We’ll talk more about these other Indian outfits below.
What is a Punjabi Suit?
Punjabi suits are made up of large loomed
cotton or wool fabrics. They’re often paired with a churidar pajama, a long
shirt and pants, worn underneath.
These pyjamas are usually long-sleeved,
folded down at the front, with a button-up front. The long shirt and pants sometimes referred to as a “tudung”, are usually made of cotton or wool with a
velvet or satin finish.
Punjabi suits are casual, loose-fitting
outfits for lounging at home or on the weekends. They’re also popular formal
wear in North India and Pakistan. They’re usually paired with a churidar pyjama,
a long shirt and pants are worn underneath. Like most Indian outfits, they’re
usually paired with a scarf. However, the scarf is usually in a contrasting
colour to the outfit to make it stand out.
History of Punjabi Suits
The origins of the Punjabi Suit are mostly
linked to the Mogul Empire of North India. During this time, the subcontinent
was a hub for the Mogul Empire.
The Moguls brought with them the
architecture, language and culture of Persia. They also brought along their
clothes and tastes.
One such style that came along with them
was the choga, a long shirt and trousers paired together. This evolved into the
churidar.
The churidar pyjama was not just a piece of
attire, it was more of a lifestyle for the people of Punjab. People would wear
them for both casual and formal wear.
The British and Indians eventually made the
churidar pyjama their formal wear. However, it wasn’t until the Independence of
India and Pakistan that the suit became more popular.
